Chapter 13

When Faith woke from her nap, she wandered into the center of the village thinking that there must be something she could do to help, but when Maria saw her she quickly gathered a couple of other women and a bundle. “We have to get you ready for the ceremony tonight,” Maria said, pulling her back in the direction of her hut.

Faith followed her for a few steps before coming to a stop, as much as she wanted to respect her hosts, participating in a ceremony hadn’t been in her plans. “What? Why me? I don’t even know what the moon festival is.”

Maria had planned what she would say very carefully. “Carter wanted you to be welcomed to the tribe, she answered, not quite lying to Faith; since Carter was a member of the tribe, by marrying Faith, she would automatically be a member as well.

Faith didn’t know what to say, she couldn’t refuse, it would be beyond rude so she decided to go along with Maria. When the women descended on her and all but ripped her clothes off, she barely managed to survive the embarrassment, but soon under their skilled hands, she forgot to be embarrassed. They rubbed scented oils into her skin, and her hair until she was glowing in the light of the small fire they’d lit in the hut.

When they brought out the clothing she was to wear, she did begin to protest, but Maria said, “You’ll look beautiful in this, and you won’t be the only one dressed this way, I promise.”

Faith looked at the skimpy skirt and top skeptically, there was so little to it that she was sure she’d be falling out everywhere. But when Maria slipped it on, she found that it fit like a glove, hugging her in just the right places. When the women looked at her, they let out a collective sigh clearly pleased with what they’d accomplished. Then they disappeared out the door, chattering to themselves as they went.

Faith stood in the center of the hut unsure what to do next, but Maria had one last thing for Faith. “I don’t have enough time to explain to you all our beliefs, but this ring of flowers represents fertility and long life,” she said, placing a ring of flowers on Faith’s head like a crown. “Since Carter is your, uh, sponsor he’ll approach the chief with you. You’ll take it off and give it to the chief who will bless it then hand it to Carter who will place it on your head once again.”

Faith narrowed her eyes at Maria thinking that it sounded a lot like a wedding ceremony, but before she could ask any questions, Maria said, “We better go, don’t want to be late.” Then she quickly changed her clothes into an outfit similar to Faith’s but with a lot less skin showing.

When they got to the center of the village, a huge pit had been dug to accommodate a fire large enough to let them all gather around it.
